Career Exploration

  • When you look back at how you chose your current career what do you notice? Career choices are influenced by family, geography, economic resources, identity, and mindset. Sometimes looking back we might realize the decisions we made years ago no longer fit our current needs at this phase in life. On average, an American citizen will hold 12 jobs across their lifespan. This means change is not only expected but is constant.

If you are at a time where you are ready to make a change it’s important to explore who you are, what you value, and what you need in your next role. Just as we change a lot from our teenage years until retirement, so do our interests, life experiences and needs. By exploring yourself, and then exploring career possibilities you can feel more confident in pursuing opportunities that are right for you, not just the next step on the current career path you are on. Maybe career exploration means staying in your current industry but pursuing a different role. Maybe career exploration means leaving your industry and role all together to explore a completely new path.

Maybe career exploration means affirming your current career choices and making a change in environment, employer or workplace culture and expectations. Let’s work together and find out what you need and help you get there!

    1. Identify your strengths, interests, personality, skills, and values

    2. Examine your work experiences to learn what you are looking for, and what you are looking to change

    3. Affirm your non-negotiables and must haves

    4. Explore your opportunities within and beyond your current career trajectory

    5. Develop your action plan for seeking out, evaluating, and pursuing new job opportunities

Burnout at Work

  • The word burnout has gotten a lot of attention, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. But what does that really mean? People who come to me with burnout expressing feelings of exhaustion, overwhelm, and frustration. Exhausted at the thought of starting their workday, lacking motivation for even simple tasks, and feeling as though even if they do get time to rest they still return feeling in the same place. Overwhelm can look like feeling behind at work and struggling to know how to start tackling your tasks, or it can feel like anxiety, stuckness, and isolating. Maybe your mind is telling you- there is no one who can do all these things other than me and there’s nothing I can do to change this. Or perhaps you are starting to get resentful of a job that used to bring you joy, or resentful of colleagues or people in your personal life.

    So what’s the answer?

Leave your organization and take on your same role somewhere else?

Leave your position behind to find a different career entirely?

Go back to sleep and hope you’ll feel differently when you’re rested?

If you are thinking these things (or have even taken these steps) it’s time to make some changes! Feeling this way about work isn’t living and isn’t working for you. But here is the thing: burnout will follow you wherever you go and will be present in whatever you do until you address it within yourself. So that means changing your environment or your work might help, but you also need to change your own approach to the role work plays in your life.

    1. Assess the challenges you are facing within your workplace, your working relationships, and yourself

    2. Explore your strengths, as well as areas for growth

    3. Identify tools and strategies you need to add into your toolbox

    4. Implement the tools and strategies needed for sustainable and meaningful change

Skills we might build together: Boundary Setting, Time management, Assertiveness & Communication, Rest, Connection, Self-Confidence, and reducing people-pleasing tendencies

Growth & Wellness

  • So let’s say you are satisfied or are proud of where you are professionally. But after focusing on that area of your life you’re now looking around and realized there is more to life than achievement and work success. Do you feel like something is missing? Or maybe things do not feel meaningful or enjoyable? Sometimes it is easier to focus on work, because it’s a clearer path and goals can seem a bit more attainable. Focusing on your relationships, social connection, health, wellness, and joy are a bit less concrete and linear. I get it! Maybe you are Googling: What are adult hobbies? How do you make friends as an adult? How do you build a sense of community? What will give my life more meaning? How do you find what brings you joy?

For my clients who want help in this area they are looking for a way to take a look inward and identify what they really want in life, and need help creating a pathway to get there. There isn’t a rulebook or a how to guide for this and that is why I want to help!

    1. Assess your values, and roles/responsibilities within your life

    2. Identify areas of satisfaction, and areas you’d like to change

    3. Examine your connection with yourself, others, and your overall community

    4. Explore experiences, connection, and opportunities in the past and present that have connected with your values

    5. Create an action plan with accountability to take steps to prioritizing building and leaning into your identity as a whole person
